Migration in the Masai Mara

The migration has been based in the Masai Mara since mid-June. The wildebeest and zebra continue to zig-zag across the Mara and Talek Rivers in search of better grazing. They can cross multiple times in a single day, offering safari guest lots of opportunities to see them evading the hungry crocodiles. There are wildebeest and zebra dotted around the Mara Triangle.

There are less tourists in the Masai Mara this year, giving those that have made the journey a much better safari experience. There are fewer white vans around and more opportunity for guests to find some privacy along the river's edge.

Migration Update: Central Serengeti

The migration is in the central Serengeti heading west (towards the Grumeti River) and north. They will continue west into the western corridor of the Serengeti and then head north towards the Masai Mara over the coming weeks.

To see the migration this year, we are recommending the northern Serengeti from July to November.

Sun Safaris has some excellent safari packages and tours this year.

Migration on the move

The wildebeest have started to move from the southern Serengeti. The main migrating herds are in the central Serengeti. Some of the herds are moving west towards the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti. Other herds are milling around Seronera, Moru or heading north west. The migration will continue moving west into the Grumeti (western Serengeti) and north west directly into the northern Serengeti over the coming weeks. They will continue migrating west and then north until they reach the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti, normally around late July.

The best permanent camps at this time of year are:
Dunia Camp: Situated in the beautiful Moru Kopjes.
Grumeti Tented Camp: Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp offers 10 luxury safari tents.

The best mobile camps are:

Migration News: Calving season in the Southern Serengeti

The migration has been located around the southern Serengeti for the past couple of months. The heavy rains in the past few weeks heralds the start of the calving season.

The herds are based from the outer Ngorongoro slopes through Ndutu Pleins and as far west as Kusini. They continually move to find the best grazing across the southernly Serengeti region, their favourite being the short rich grasses of Ndutu.

Going can be tough for safari vehicles at this time of year, with a number of the smaller roads closed off to preserve them. Safari guests can expect to see rain on a drive, so come prepared. Anyone going on safari to the southern Serengeti will be treated to thousands of playful calves and predators waiting to pick off any stragglers.

The best camps at this time of year are camps that can cope with the rain:
Kusini Camp
Ndutu Lodge
