Heavy rain in the past few weeks

There has been lots of rain over the past few weeks, with the Mara River filled to capacity. The migration is still in the southern Serengeti with some movement west and into the cenral Serengeti.

Game viewing is good, but can be very muddy in parts. A good safari vehicle is essential at this time of year. Some of the tracks are impassable. The best place to the migration is still around Ndutu and towards Kleins Camp.

Thanks for the updates. I'm heading to the Serengeti on the 30th may. staying 1 night in Central then heading for 2 nights in the Western Corridor. do you think we may be too early for the western Corridor and better to say central?

It is always a good idea to hedge your bets and have 2 locations in the Serengeti to visit as you double your chances of being close the the migration. I wouldn't be making changes as the western corridor always has good resident game anyway. And the Grumeti region is outstanding for game viewing and scenery.

I am staying at Mbalageti Lodge for 5 nights starting 21 May. Is it too early for the migration at Mbalageti lodge or will the herds reach the western corridor ?
If they have not rached, then where should we be heading for game drives ?

Mbalageti Lodge will be a good location for the migration towards the end of May. Even if the main herds are not exactly there, there should still be lots of wildebeest and you should be close enough to see the migration. Have a good time.

We will be at the Porini Lion Camp July 9 - 12 in the Mara.
Any thoughts on the course of the migration at that time?
Would a hot air balloon trip be worthwhile?
Thanks

It is hard to know at this stage. In the past few years they have arrived early-to-mid July. Porini Lion Camp is superb - one of our favourites - and they always have good resident game so I would not be too focused on only the migration.

I am going to central Serengeti around the 20th of June (Serena).

I didn't plan to see the migration when I booked the trip but now I start to hope we will have the possibility to see parts of it.

Hi,
Firstly, compliments on this really informative blog!
We would be at Serengeti national park, mid August? Now with the current rains, is it a good place to be at to view the migration? Or should we move base to Masai mara? Kindly suggest!

In mid August I would normally suggest the northern Serengeti or Masai Mara. The northern Serengeti is superb in mid-August - far fewer visitors than the Masai Mara. There are some excellent mobile camps in the northern Serengeti around this time. You could split your time between the central Serengeti and northern Serengeti. Note: The mobile camps can be quite expensive compared to some of the bigger hotel type lodges of the central Serengeti.
